Silicon Valley 5 giants form a mysterious artificial intelligence agency Apple and Tesla absent

Google, Facebook, Amazon, IBM, and Microsoft joined forces to set up a new AI cooperative organization whose goal is to help the public better understand AI and set standards for future researchers.

The name of the new organization is somewhat bizarre and it is called "Partnershipon Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society." It is not a lobbying organization. The organization claims that they will not lobby government entities. What exactly is this institution doing? Its responsibilities include guiding research, recommending best practices, and publishing research results based on public mandates. The areas involved include ethics, fairness, and inclusion; the pursuit of transparency, privacy, and interoperability; collaboration between people and AI systems; Technology becomes credible, reliable, and healthy.

When institutional members cooperate, both corporate and non-corporate users are fair, and it hopes that this move will encourage academic institutions, non-profit institutions, and policy ethics experts to join.

The five companies that founded the organization all have strong AI R&D teams. Some of them have names like household names such as Watson and Alexa. Representing Google's participation in the organization is the DeepMind subsidiary. It is a pure research institution. In March this year, DeepMind hit the headlines. It developed machines that defeated Korean Go players.

Apple and Tesla did not join

Despite this, some companies and organizations have not joined the agency.

Apple is speeding up AI research and development, involving personal assistants, image recognition, and voice control technology. It has not joined new institutions. From past history, when other technology companies shake hands and make peace, Apple likes to be unique. For example, in 2015, Apple alone rebelled against the Investigatory Power Bill proposed by Britain, and Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter, and Yahoo jointly opposed it. In March of this year, Apple joined the cooperation organization.

The new agency has two interim co-chairs. Microsoft Eric Horvitz is one of them. He said: "We are negotiating with Apple. As far as I know, Apple is very interested. I personally hope it can join in." Apple declined to comment .

OpenAI was not added to the new organization. It is a research institute initiated by Musk. Its goal is to promote the development of digital intelligence and benefit humanity as much as possible. OpenAI has secured $1 billion in financing. It is the most independently funded independent AI research laboratory in the industry and OpenAI's goals are complementary to those of the new organization.

“We are inviting many different research laboratories and groups to join in,” said Mustafa Suleyman of DeepMind. “We encourage AI research to be conducted in a variety of forms. This is a good thing. We try to keep open as much as possible for different studies.” Sex.” Mustafa Suleyman is also co-chair of the new agency. Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI and CTO, said: “We are very pleased to see the establishment of a new organization. The industry collaboration is beneficial to everyone. In the future, we expect non-profit organizations to join in as first-tier members.”

In fact, this is not the first time DeepMind has set up an organization to promote the establishment of AI ethics. In 2014, Google acquired DeepMind. In the acquisition agreement, Google promised to set up an AI ethics committee to ensure that new technologies will not be abused. Two and a half years later, we still don't know where the committee is, nor do we know who it is. DeepMind declined to comment, it set up another ethics committee, but the organization only focused on the company's research in health care AI.

DeepMind's Suleyman said that the new agency did not replace the company's internal ethics committee, it just added. Suleyman said: "The committee is established by DeepMind itself. We are making great strides and we have made great progress." Suleyman also promised that cooperation agencies often meet.
