Cree first disclosed 208lm/W white LED product MK-R in Japan

Recently, Cree exhibited the white LED product “Cree XLamp MK-R” with a luminous efficiency of 208 lm/W at the Lighting Fair 2013, which was held at the Tokyo International Convention and Exhibition Center. MK-R is the ninth product based on "SC3 technology" (using SiC substrate), which is envisioned to replace halogen lamps. The size is 7 mm square, and the diameter of the light-emitting portion is 6 mm.

This product was announced for delivery in December 2012, but this is the first time it has been made public in Japan.

The luminous efficiency of 200 lm/W or more can be achieved only when the input power is 1 W and the temperature is 25 ° C. When the input power is 15 W and the temperature is 85 ° C, the luminous efficiency is only 106 lm/W. The nominal value on the catalog is a luminous efficiency of approximately 147 lm/W at a current of 700 mA and a temperature of 25 °C.

Cree is the first manufacturer to produce white LEDs with a luminous efficiency of over 200 lm/W. In February 2010, the company developed a technology with a laboratory luminous efficiency of 208 lm/W.

In addition, Cree announced in February 2013 that it has developed LEDs with a luminous efficiency of 276 lm/W. About two years ago, the industry generally believed that "the luminous efficiency limit of white LEDs is around 230 lm/W", and now it has greatly exceeded this value. Regarding the scheduled production time, the company said that “it took three years from the announcement of research and development to production, and it has become faster recently. If it is fast, it may be launched around 2015”.
