China Mobile Chairman: WeChat and Skype are terrible

At the MWC Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, ​​China Mobile's booth, TD-LTE (4G) terminal products and solutions occupy most of the space and attention.

Over the past few days, Kuang Guohua, chairman of China Mobile, has been walking around in all aspects of the industry chain and has frequently conveyed his confidence in the 4G standard that China Mobile is leading. When interviewed by the Southern Metropolis Daily yesterday, Miao Guohua said three times that he was full of confidence in TD-LTE. Kuang Guohua more bluntly, China Mobile is facing great pressure, and the competition from the Internet is more terrible than the competition from traditional operators such as China Unicom and telecommunications.

TD is not a bad sign Southern Metro: Some people say that in the 3G era, China Mobile grabbed TD and it was difficult to fight. However, China Unicom has more advantages in holding WCDMA cards. What do you think?

Kuang Guohua: TD is a Chinese-led technology with intellectual property rights. Our decision to adopt this technology is of great significance. It has a major impact on raising the level of R&D, manufacturing, and industrial chain across the country. In the past, our mobile phone was called "organic without core", but through the creation of TD, TD chips came out and other standard chips came out.

It cannot be said that TD is a bad brand. Through years of accumulation, TD-SCDMA has really matured. Since the second half of last year, China Mobile has begun to exert force, not only to increase the speed and intensity of TD network construction, but more importantly, with the maturity of terminals, TD mobile phones have started to increase in volume. Last year, TD-SCDMA handsets sold 60 million units. This year, the guiding target is 100 million to 120 million units.

We now have an internal indicator that TD handsets must be "three-in-one" with WCDMA handsets: homogeneous, same price, and simultaneous release. Since TD does not need to pay for intellectual property, its price is sometimes cheaper than other formats. Therefore, the difficulties are temporary, and the advantages of independent innovation have already begun to show. Take TD and China Unicom's WCDMA, Telecom's CDMA2000 competition, China Mobile is full of confidence.

4G pushes the double-hundred plan Nandu: LTE technology has two camps of LTE FDD and LTE TDD. Currently, there are hundreds of global operators using FD D networking. On the contrary, there are currently only 10 operators that choose TD-LTE. From the perspective of the industry chain, on the 4G, will China Mobile still have the problem of starting from behind? Will Mobile seek more policy support?

Ruan Guohua: As China Mobile sets a good foundation for TD-SCDMA in the 3G standard, China Mobile’s dominant TD-LTE can basically achieve synchronization with FDD. Especially after the proposed TDD and FDD convergence networking, we have obtained a lot of industrial chain. Support, I am full of confidence in the development of TD-LTE.

Why do most people choose FDD now? Because FDD's current industrial chain is relatively mature, it will go earlier. However, as the explosive growth of traffic, how to effectively use the frequency is even more important. The use of TDD frequency is more in line with the characteristics of the mobile Internet: If the efficiency of using TDD is 5:1, FDD is only 1.5:1, and TDD has obvious advantages. Therefore, in the long run, I believe there will be more operators using TDD technology and more manufacturers will support TDD.

Of course, how to issue a license is not something I can answer. In fact, what kind of license is selected is not determined by the operator, nor even decided by the government, but is determined by the frequency of your hands.

Nandu: This year, China Mobile’s TD-LTE purchase volume will exceed 1 million units, and TD-LTE trial commercials will be expanded in more than 100 cities across the country. Is the mobile 4G pace accelerating? Will China Mobile invest in 4G this year?

Kuang Guohua: Before we conducted TD-LTE trial commercial tests in 15 cities, we are now basically mature and have the basis for scale expansion. We will build 200,000 base stations this year, and we will purchase over one million terminals. Expand commercial trials in over 100 prefecture-level cities. In the past six months, TD-LTE has developed rapidly from appearance to function. If it is done well, I can say that there must be more than 100 cities and the population should exceed 500 million. I think this should be the world’s largest TD. - LTE network.

However, TD-LTE is still in the development stage, and the market can not be left blank, so this year our main focus is still on the TD-SCDMA, 3G network to do a good job, the development of 3G terminals. However, with the maturity of TD-LT E, China Mobile’s investment will gradually shift, increasing investment in 4G to meet market demand.

The Nandu Capital of Traditional Operators: China Mobile is now facing competition from its peers and challenges from Internet companies. How to deal with it?

Kuang Guohua: Traditional operators are currently facing great pressure. The first competition is the competition between the three traditional operators, but only the amount of change, you are a little more, I am less; and the second competition, may cause qualitative changes, such as WeChat, Skype, for us Voice, short-message letters have produced a great alternative. From my point of view, the challenge of the Internet is even more terrible.

But OTT (refers to Internet companies using operators' broadband networks to develop their own businesses) is a technological advancement. Through the technological revolution, Internet companies have introduced cheap and attractive products. You let the people not choose, and that is impossible. How traditional operators respond.

Traditional operators have to make a transition. You have to fight in accordance with the old routines. It is unsustainable. This issue is not a problem for China Mobile. Operators all over the world, including Vodafone, are talking about this issue. We proposed a four-word strategy: smart pipeline, open platform, featured business, and optimized interface.

A strategy has, but does not mean, success. It depends on how it lands and whether it has the ability to implement strategies: including network capabilities, marketing capabilities, management capabilities, and team capabilities.

In addition, traffic management is the main business direction of China Mobile in the future. Specifically, it is the improvement of two capabilities: the improvement of network capabilities and the promotion of marketing capabilities. Our network needs to be reconstructed or even rebuilt to meet the needs of users; in the design of traffic tariff packages, we are also moving forward.
