Otellini said at the conference that Intel has introduced data-only mode LTE modem chips to customers, and multi-mode modem chips supporting data and voice are expected to be launched in 2013. He added that it is expected that the first batch of mobile phones using Intel LTE technology will be available in early 2014, around the time of the Mobile World Congress.
Due to the lack of mobile application processor products that integrate baseband and processor, Intel is a long way behind Qualcomm in the communications field. The latter's Snapdragon series processors can already provide integrated LTE technical support. Other application processor products that also integrate baseband modems include Renesas Mobile's MP6530 and ST-Ericsson's NovaThor L8580 ModAp chip with a 28-nanometer FDI-SOI process.
Most of Intel ’s wireless technology comes from Infineon Technologies ’wireless business unit, which completed the acquisition process in early 2011.
