ST's L3GD20H gyroscope is only 3 x 3x 1mm in size and is the smallest gyroscope chip on the market and is mass-produced through ST's market-proven, high-quality MEMS manufacturing process. With a footprint of only one-half of the previous generation, new products offer better resolution, higher accuracy, superior stability and faster response times, enabling them to be implemented in smart consumer electronics. Smaller detection mechanisms, target applications include cell phones, tablets, game console controllers, digital cameras, and industrial control tools.
This ultra-small gyroscope can also bring the distance between experimental projects (for example, wearing electronics) to practical applications. One of the application examples is the prototype of smart clothing released by STMicroelectronics in early 2012 for the demonstration of inertial human motion reconstruction technology. Such technology can enhance a variety of application experiences, such as augmented reality, sports aids, or rehabilitation.

STMicroelectronics' MEMS gyroscopes, accelerometers, magnetometers and iNEMOTM inertial sensor modules enable innovative products and applications such as context-sensitive user interfaces, augmented reality applications, motion control games, and Industrial solutions such as container tracking or emergency stop mechanisms. IHS iSuppli's forecast report published in February 2012 pointed out that as of 2015, the total market size of such applications driven by MEMS devices will triple, reaching $4.25 billion. In particular, the market size of 3-axis gyroscopes (such as ST's L3GD20H) will reach more than 900 million US dollars.
In addition to reducing the size of advanced products, ST's L3GD20H also saves battery usage and reduces power consumption by 25% compared to previous generations. The boot time of the L3GD20H is one-fifth that of the previous generation, which helps to improve the user experience of the terminal application. Finally, the output noise of the new gyroscope products is 60% lower than that of the previous generation, which helps simplify the hardware and software design and speed up the communication between the gyroscope and the host system, thus achieving faster and higher application performance.
The new gyroscope retains the register structure of the previous generation (L3GD20), enabling designers to reuse existing software code to reduce time-to-market and reduce development costs. Designers can also benefit from ST's Sensor Fusion development environment.
