iWatch is expected to carry 5 new technologies

At present, the rumors about Apple iWatch have reached the point of "myth". Almost all the technologies that have just come out, or have not yet appeared on the market, have been "applied" to iWatch by analysts. In this regard, the well-known US technology media has recently summarized the five cutting-edge technologies and materials that are most likely to be applied to iWatch based on Apple's previous acquisition history and patent application records.

1, sapphire material

A company in the US called GT Advanced Technologies announced a multi-year supply agreement with Apple on sapphire materials earlier this year. It is reported that the total price of this paper agreement is as high as 576 million US dollars. This cooperation almost certainly confirms that iOS devices will rely more on sapphire as a high-end material in the future.

It is believed that the new sapphire material jointly developed by Apple and GT Advanced Technologies will definitely replace the Gorilla Glass tempered glass used in existing iPhones and iPads. Another possibility is that this material will be used in iWatch production lines with smaller screen sizes, while replacing the camera lenses and Touch ID materials of existing iOS devices.

It should be said that if Apple does apply sapphire material in future products, we are almost certain that iWatch will be one of them. At present, most high-end watch manufacturers apply this material to their own watch products because of the friction and scratch resistance. On the other hand, sapphire is also easier to customize according to the needs of users.

2, liquid metal

According to a 10-K report submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission by a liquid metal company called Liquidmetal Technologies, the company has been working with Apple since 2010 and has reached a $20 million technology licensing agreement. . At the same time, Apple submitted a series of patent applications related to the production of this liquid metal material.

It is reported that liquid metal is an amorphous metal material, which is lighter, harder and more flexible than traditional metal materials used in electronic products, and is very scratch-resistant. But as we all know, this material is currently difficult to mass produce, although Apple used this material in the iPhone 3G to create a SIM card to test. However, according to the discoverers of the material, it takes at least 2-4 years of research and development time in the industry to use it on a large scale for commercial production.

It is worth mentioning that Apple has now obtained exclusive use of this new metal technology.

3, OLED technology

OLED, also known as "Organic Light-Emitting Diode", has self-luminous properties and uses a very thin coating of organic materials and a glass substrate. These organic materials illuminate when current is passed through. O LED display screen and viewing angle, and can save a lot of power. If this technology is applied to the device, the device will become lighter, thinner, and can bend to some extent.

So far, Apple has applied for a series of patents related to OLED technology, and also convinced a LG senior OLED researcher to join the company.

Obviously, if this material is finally applied to iWatch, Apple's iWatch will fit perfectly on the user's wrist. But it's worth pointing out that Apple's management seems to have never been a fan of OLEDs. The company's CEO, Tim Cook, said earlier this year: "The brightness of the apple retina display screen is twice that of OLED. Some vendors are indeed using OLED screens now, but OLED color saturation is not ideal. If you are shopping online and the color of the selected product is displayed on the OLED screen, you should be cautious."

4, Micro LED

Earlier this year, Apple invested in the acquisition of LuxVue Technology, a startup that uses Micro LED technology to produce displays. Micro LED technology has the characteristics of low energy consumption and high brightness, so it competes directly with the support manufacturers of OLED technology.

In all fairness, this technology is still in its early stages of development and has not yet found the right way to enter the mass consumer market. However, Apple's move to acquire LuxVue has undoubtedly greatly enhanced the future application potential of this technology. At the same time, some media broke the news that LuxVue also has a patent for producing curved Micro LED display screens, which further increases the possibility of Apple applying this technology in future iWatch.

5, semiconductor

In the past few years, Apple has invested heavily in many semiconductor manufacturers. For example, in 2008, Apple acquired PA Semi, a chip maker based in Santa Clara, Calif., which produces energy-efficient chips for networking and communications equipment. In 2010, Apple acquired Intrinsity, another processor provider that partnered with Samsung to launch the world's fastest ARM Cortex-A8 architecture mobile processor core.

In August last year, Apple successfully acquired Passif, a Silicon Valley-focused manufacturer of low-power communication chips. In the most recent November last year, Apple acquired PrimeSense, the development company behind the first generation of Kinect, for $345 million. At the end of the transaction, Apple’s total investment in the semiconductor sector has reached $1 billion. So we have every reason to believe that Apple may have a low-power processor chip with integrated baseband, application processor and wireless communication controllers in the future iWatch product.
