MID increased by 72% in 2010

Do you still remember the hot MID (Mobile Internet Device)? Although this concept has been labeled as a failure by many people, the size of smart phones, e-books, and tablets, etc., which have risen in succession, is also counted.

Robert Castellano, president of market research firm Information Network, pointed out: "The total size of the MID market in 2010 was 314 million, an increase of 72% year-on-year. In contrast, the increase in 2009 was only 20%."

Such substantial growth comes from a variety of contributions, including an increase of 90% in e-book readers, a 60% increase in smart phones, and nearly 20 million iPad sales. Looking forward to 2011, the shipment growth of MID equipment will also be 44%.

From a processor perspective, the MID market is dominated by ARM, with 95% of mobile phones and 85% of smart phones being ruled by it. So far, there are more than 20 large authorized manufacturers of ARM architecture technology, including Alcatel, Atmel, Broadcom, Cirrus Logic, DEC, Freescale, Intel (through DEC), LG Group, Marvell, NEC, NVIDIA, NXP (former Philips Semiconductors Division), Oki, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sharp, STMicroelectronics, Symbios Logic, Texas Instruments, VLSI Technology, Yamaha, ZiiLABS (Innovation), and TSMC.
