The UK government hopes to encourage innovation and R&D by setting up a fund to fund small energy-efficient lighting projects

   The UK's Technology Strategy Committee, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Food and Rural Affairs Department said they want to help companies become market leaders in high-performance lighting, while also reducing the energy consumption of UK home lighting.
   Through the Small Business Research Program (SBRI), companies can obtain contracts through competition. The plan will be conducted in two phases, with the application date being February 22, 2010 and the deadline being April 19.
   The first phase of the application is a technical feasibility review of up to £40,000 per project for directional and non-directional lighting. Specific technical details were required for the project to demonstrate an ultra-energy-saving light source that meets technical standards.
   The ultra-energy-saving light source is not strictly defined, but the technical standard requires a lumen efficiency of 90 lm/W and a color temperature between 2700 and 3000K.
   The second phase will be to prototype and demonstrate the technologies promised in the first phase. The maximum capital for each project is £450,000 and the maximum time for the project is 12 months. This is the further development of the first phase, involving details such as detail design, production preparation, product reliability testing and demonstration, including CE certification.
   The results of the second phase will produce 50 ç› lighting fixtures for field testing over the next six months, which will work with the Technical Strategy Committee. This phase will achieve complete safety certification, environmental reliability studies and at least three months of life cycle assessment, showing whether the life expectancy is 25,000 hours (L70).
   Environment Minister Dan Norris said: “Building a sustainable, low-carbon and resource-efficient future is important to our environmental protection, and it can also promote economic development and increase jobs. This funding will be given to UK companies and consumers. Come to benefit."
