Swedish startups announce nanowire breakthrough technology for solar energy

Lund, Sweden On April 22nd, in a major breakthrough technology for solar energy, Sweden's advanced materials startup Sol Voltaics AB has proved its nanowire technology has achieved calibration and orientation success on the film. This achievement highlights the most important technological milestones in solar nanowire manufacturing to date, paving the way for photovoltaic (PV) modules to achieve 27% and higher conversion efficiency – a move that will increase the conversion efficiency of today's solar modules by 50%. .

Nanowires exhibit promising characteristics in solar power generation, but due to their high aspect ratio and material properties, nanowires are very difficult to calibrate. By calibrating and orienting nanowires in centimeter-scale on standard-size wafers, Sol Voltaics has taken an important step in the application of solar cells to tandem photovoltaic modules for commercial production.

"Today's announcement marks an important moment for Sol Voltaics and the global solar industry," said Erik Smith, CEO of Sol Voltaics. "GaAs" nanowires have reached the forefront of the industry, and there is great hope for improving the efficiency of solar modules far beyond the current level. By calibrating the nanowires in the film, we have already taken The largest step toward commercial scale manufacturing of solar nanowire films. This will enable solar panel manufacturers to significantly increase their ability to generate electricity."

In 2015 Sol Voltaics released a message, Fraunhofer-ISE confirmed that the company's epitaxial growth of GaAs nanowire solar cells achieved a world record of 15.3% PV conversion efficiency. The latest milestone following this message is that these batteries were recently retested by Fraunhofer and showed little or no battery decay during the 18 months after the initial test, further confirming the technical reliability of the technology.

In addition to breakthroughs in nanowire calibration, Sol Voltaics' Aerotoxy® production technology has evolved over several generations. This patented process allows the production of cost-effective Group III (V-V) nanowire solar cells by continuous gas phase processes.

“We have made several significant advancements over the past few quarters, and the momentum continues in several areas,” Smith said. “Actually, we still have some remaining obstacles to overcome in the process of commercialization, but we are very confident that we can provide a truly transformative energy solution for those of Breakthrough Energy CoaliTIon, COP21 Summit and others. The global effort to fight climate change and create a solution called for by the clean energy economy."
