Japan's prince holding doubles the brightness of the substrate with micro-machining of the substrate

Japan's Prince Holdings Co., Ltd. announced that it has established microfabrication technology using fine particle precision coating technology and successfully doubled the brightness of LED and organic EL components. The company said it will supply sapphire substrates for LEDs that are surface-processed using this technology in 2016. The company exhibited LEDs and organic EL components manufactured by the technology at the "LED Next Stage 2014" (held at the Tokyo Amihi International Convention and Exhibition Center from March 4th to 7th, 2014).

Recently, many high-efficiency LEDs have been fabricated with a fine embossed or wavy sapphire substrate "PSS (Patterned Sapphire Substrate)". A large number of cases show that with PSS, gallium nitride (GaN) crystals on the substrate can be more easily reflected, thereby improving the light extraction efficiency of the LED, and the luminous efficiency can be improved by 20 to 30%. When manufacturing PSS, lithography and nanoimprint technology in semiconductor manufacturing technology are generally used.

This time, the LEDs produced by Prince Holdings also use PSS substrates, but they do not use lithography and nanoimprint technology. They use the company's self-developed "ND (Nano-Point Array)-PSS", which uses this The company's unique fine particle precision coating technology. The company did not disclose the details of the technology, only that it can realize a composite structure composed of a pitch of several hundred nm and a pitch of several μm in addition to the ND-PSS which can realize the uneven structure with a minimum pitch of 200 nm. Type ND-PSS.

According to Prince Holdings, the LEDs manufactured using this ND-PSS have a front-side luminance of 2.4 times and a total luminous flux of 1.8 times. However, the luminous efficiency has not been announced.

Further, in the prototype organic EL device in which the glass substrate is processed by this technique, the front luminance of the red light-emitting element is increased by about 2 times, the front luminance of the white light-emitting element is increased by about 1.7 times, and low power consumption and long life are also achieved. This is because the irregularities formed on the surface of the glass substrate become irregularities of the electrodes, which contribute to the extraction of surface plasmons from the surface of the electrodes. "This is jointly researched with the Japanese Institute of Physical Chemistry" (Prince Holdings).

Prince Holdings plans to sell 2 to 6 inches of PSS substrates from 4 inches starting in 2016. The company has not previously sold LED sapphire substrates, this time is a new involvement in this field.
