· New IP products extend Synopsys' "Smart" subsystem family optimized for IoT applications

Synopsys, Inc. (NASDAQ: SNPS) announced today that it has launched a new intelligent data fusion IP subsystem, DesignWare® Smart Data Fusion IP Subsystem, which is an integrated, pre-verified Hardware and software IP products optimized for efficient DSP performance and ultra-low power consumption. This Smart Data Fusion IP Subsystem offers an optional DesignWare ARC® EM DSP processor that includes the latest EM9D and EM11D cores that support XY memory for improved signal processing performance. A built-in micro DMA controller minimizes system-level power consumption and allows the processor to perform data transfers while in one of several programmable sleep modes. Integrated peripherals, memory, hardware accelerators, and software DSP functions provide the execution efficiency required for routine processing tasks in IoT applications, including continuous sensor fusion, voice and image detection, and audio playback.

"Internet of Things border devices are increasingly requiring a combination of low-power awareness and high-performance processing," said Tadaaki Yamauchi, vice president of core technology at Renesas Electronics. "Through our collaborative demonstration platform and advanced 40nm embedded flash technology, Renesas and Synopsys showcase how designers can leverage complementary technologies such as Synopsys' DesignWare Smart Data Fusion IP Subsystem and Renesas' innovative, high-speed Embedded Flash Controller IP to develop high performance and cost optimized IoT subsystems in a short period of time."

The DesignWare Smart Data Fusion IP is designed to handle data from a wide range of digital and analog sensors with minimal power consumption, offloading the main processor, and enabling more efficient processing of sensor data. This fully configurable IP subsystem includes an ARC EM5D, EM7D, EM9D or EM11D processor. This family of low-power cores combines RISC and DSP processing and includes support for XY memory banks to achieve a continuous throughput of one 32x32 MAC operation per clock cycle (or two 16x16 MAC operations). Additional signal processing bandwidth has been optimized to manage the large amount of data processing required by advanced sensor fusion algorithms and improve the processing efficiency of a range of audio formats including MP3, SBC, OPUS and AAC LC. For example, in a 40nm low-power process, when performing codec tasks such as Bluetooth Low Complexity Subband Coding (SBC) through the ARC processor, the power consumption required is less than 40 microwatts, while the frequency is higher than the competitive processor. The product is 25% lower.

The subsystem's built-in micro DMA controller still supports memory and peripheral access while the processor is in a sleep state, providing four times faster access times than traditional bus-based DMA implementations. In addition, the subsystem includes highly optimized I/O peripherals, including multiple SPI, I2C, and analog-to-digital converter interfaces, further reducing the number of gates and reducing power consumption while reducing engineering effort.

To simplify software development, the subsystem includes a variety of software drivers and a rich library of ready-to-use DSP functions, including support for filtering, correlators, matrices/vectors, decimation/interpolation, and other complexities. Mathematical operations, etc. By using native DSP processor instructions and tightly coupled hardware accelerators, designers can implement these sensor-specific DSP functions in hardware to increase performance efficiency and reduce power consumption. The subsystem is supported by commercial software that covers a range of IoT features including speech recognition, voice control, motion sensing, and audio post-processing and playback. In addition, Synopsys' open software platform, embARC Open Software Platform, enables software developers to obtain a complete set of free and open source software online, speeding up subsystem code development.

"Advanced sensor fusion applications require high levels of integration with the lowest power consumption and the smallest area," said John Koeter, vice president of IP and prototyping at Synopsys. “The new DesignWare Smart Data Fusion IP Subsystem provides designers with a pre-validated hardware/software solution that gives designers the DSP capabilities they need to manage special tasks while still meeting system power Budgeting tasks such as processing sensor information, recognizing sound and audio playback, etc. By providing a complete, pre-integrated IP subsystem, we enable designers to quickly integrate this key functionality into their IoT devices. Medium, while significantly reducing risk and reducing workload."
