Silicon-based gallium nitride (GaN-on-Si) is receiving increasing attention from LED manufacturers because of its lower cost. Azzuro Semiconductor, the industry leader in silicon-based GaN substrates, plans to divide LED cakes: it has established a division dedicated to the production of silicon-based GaN LEDs. The strategy of the new division is to license Azzuro's intellectual property to LED manufacturers.
According to Azzuro, the use of silicon-based GaN strain engineering technology will significantly improve the LED industry in terms of cost reduction, capacity increase and binning cost reduction. To this end, the company has used its stencil wafers to successfully turn customers into silicon GaN quickly and cost-effectively.
Azzuro LED technology licensing and transfer is divided into two phases. Starting with Azzuro stencil wafers, customers get the benefits of GaN in a few weeks and get assistance from Azzuro experts: on Azzuro templates, customers can grow their own LED architecture. Moreover, Azzuro is able to supply all LED epitaxial wafers , from project start-up to support customers to a simpler and higher yield silicon-based GaN back-end process.
The customer is then able to turn the LED growth to silicon-based gallium nitride. Azzuro's experienced engineers will provide training and assistance to customers to transfer Azzuro's growth technology to their customers' epitaxial reactors. At this stage, customers can grow 150 or 200mm silicon-based GaN epitaxial wafers using Azzuro's technology and intellectual property. In addition to direct steering to large sizes, higher yields of the back end process and fewer bins can be achieved in a matter of weeks.
