Liang Sicheng (1901 ~ 1972)
Mr. Liang Sicheng is a native of Guangdong Province. He was born in Tokyo, Japan on April 20, 1901, and graduated from Tsinghua University in 1923. From 1924 to 1927, he studied at the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his bachelor's degree in February 1927 and his master's degree in June of that year. From July 1927 to February 1928, he studied the history of world architecture at Harvard University Research Institute. In March 1928, he married Lin Huiyin in Vancouver, Canada. After returning to China in August 1928, he founded the Department of Architecture of Northeastern University and served as the head of the department until June 1931. In 1930, he joined the Society of Construction, and from 1931 to 1945 he was appointed as the director of the French Department of China Construction Society.
From 1932 to 1933, he taught architectural history at Peking University. From 1933 to 1946, he was a communications researcher at the Institute of History and Languages ​​of the Academia Sinica and concurrently a researcher. Since 1934, he has been a member of the Chinese Antiquities Preservation Committee. From 1945 to 1946, he served as deputy director of the Chinese Theater Cultural Relics Maintenance Committee. In 1946, he founded the Department of Architecture of Tsinghua University and served as professor and department head. In 1947 he was appointed as the representative of the United Nations Headquarters Building Design Committee in China. In September 1948, he was elected as an academician of the Academia Sinica. Since 1949, he has served as deputy director of the Beiping Urban Planning Committee and deputy director of the Beijing Construction Committee. Since 1953, he has served as the vice chairman of the Chinese Architectural Society. In 1955, he was elected as a member of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
His main design works include: Beijing Renli Carpet Company Shop, Jilin University School Building “Cooperation with Chen Zhi, Tong Tong”, Jiaotong University School Building, Peking University Geological Museum, Peking University Girls Dormitory, etc. He has designed the project for the Monument to the People's Heroes (architectural design) and the Yangzhou Jianzhen Monk Memorial Hall.
Mr. Liang Sicheng has done a lot of work on the protection of ancient Chinese architecture and cultural relics. He and his colleagues have conducted surveys on more than 2,000 ancient buildings and cultural relics in China, and wrote the History of Chinese Architecture. He has conducted in-depth research and exploration on how to inherit and carry forward the national architectural style, how to protect outstanding national traditional architecture in urban planning, and in the traditional architectural theory, and wrote a large number of theoretical articles, leaving many posterity to future generations.
