Intersil Corporation has announced the launch of the ISL76321 Serial/Deserializer (SerDes) interface chip for automotive rear view security systems. This single-chip transceiver solution simplifies system design by delivering video data, bidirectional control information and power over a shielded twisted pair (STP) cable. This product helps designers reduce system cost and simplify design while extending transmission distance and improving video image quality. The ISL76321 extends the Intersil portfolio with Intersil Techwell® display management, LED lighting, ambient brightness sensing and power management devices to provide customers with a complete rear view camera security solution.

The ISL76321 combines 16-bit video data and bi-directional I2C control information on a single high-speed STP cable with a data transmission distance of more than 20 meters. The ISL76321's unique link remote control feature allows the controller to capture images via the I2C interface, and the operating mode can be selected and adjusted, such as exposure and window size. This feature makes it easy for the camera to work under dynamically changing conditions. The use of video data lines to transmit control data eliminates wiring complexity and reduces weight.
The camera link contains a pair of ISL76321 cables that establish a high-resolution, serial data link between the far-end video camera and the central control unit by connecting an STP line. With a pixel clock range of 8MHz to 50MHz and a raw data rate of up to 1000Mbps, this interface transceiver provides reliable links for a wide range of video-based automotive active and passive safety systems such as lane departure warning, road sign recognition and avoidance of pedestrians. Such systems have received great attention. The US Automotive Safety Management Agency (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has issued a notice requesting that all new models in the United States must have a rearview camera installed in 2014 to avoid driver collisions with pedestrians.
The ISL76321 uses industry standard 8b/10b encoding technology to improve signal integrity and support link hot swap. Even in the toughest noisy environments, the unique fast line-speed locking PLL system (locking time is 10 microseconds, more than 10 microseconds for similar devices) guarantees link reliability – an important part of critical safety systems factor.
The ISL76321 enhances functionality and adds transmission pre-emphasis and cable equalization (EQ). These features support 16-speed programming, allowing this product to be used with multiple in-line connectors for cable transmission distances up to 20 meters. At the same time, in short-range applications, the ISL76321 can use lower cost cables to further reduce system cost. Transceiver cable equalization improves the signal-to-noise ratio at the receiving end without increasing EMI emissions.
Finally, the Intersil solution helps support the maximum load current (up to one amp) in a low-cost LVDS supply mode. In this way, the system can be powered remotely from the same STP cable, further reducing wiring complexity, cost and weight, and simplifying OEM installation.
The ISL76321 is currently undergoing AECQ100 Level 2 certification (-40°C to 105°C). The product is available in a small 48-pin TQFN package and is priced at $4.55 in 1,000-unit quantities. The device is currently sampling to certified customers and is scheduled for volume production in 2011. Evaluation systems for customers to evaluate product performance include transmitter and receiver boards, as well as Molex HSALink cables.
