Broadcom Launches World's Smallest, Most Energy-Efficient Automotive Ethernet Switch Family

The rapid growth of in-vehicle applications has led to an increase in bandwidth demand, which has put pressure on the automotive network. By using Broadcom's high-performance BroadR-Reach Ethernet technology, automotive manufacturers can not only increase bandwidth, but also ensure they meet the latest industry standards for a highly secure network. The wired Ethernet connection acts as a vehicle's network gateway, providing device authentication that protects the car from malicious attacks, eavesdropping, and unauthorized device installation. In addition, Broadcom's new BCM8953x series also creates a centralized switch that brings together previously independent connections such as reversing cameras, dashboards, and audio and video streaming to share data and improve user experience across a wide range of applications.

Broadcom's BroadR-Reach automotive Ethernet technology is now widely used in a wide range of models including the BMW X3, X4, X5, X6, i3, i8, 6 and 7 series, as well as Jaguar XJ, XF and Volkswagen Passat.

Dr. Ali Abaye, Senior Director of Automotive Business at Broadcom, said: "The performance, scalability and security of Ethernet technology have shown great potential in the automotive market. Experts predict that Ethernet ports will be deployed in cars by 2020[3]. It will reach 500 million. With a new generation of highly integrated BroadR-Reach devices, Broadcom will not only reduce power consumption by 30%, but also reduce bill of materials costs, paving the way for the widespread promotion of automotive Ethernet."

Ian Riches, Director of Global Automotive Business at Strategy AnalyTIcs, said: "Car Ethernet starts in Europe, but a newer, lower-power, next-generation automotive Ethernet switch is creating opportunities for other regions, including Asia, especially Japan. The market offers tremendous potential. Broadcom's standards-based BroadR-Reach technology provides a solid foundation for accelerating the development of connected cars worldwide."

Natalie A. Wienckowski, Chairman of the OPEN Alliance Special Interest Group (SIGN Alliance SIG) and Head of Strategy for Core Hardware at General Motors, said: "The single-pair Ethernet technology standardization based on Broadcom and IEEE based on Broadcom and IEEE promotes the global The widespread adoption of automotive manufacturers and the expanding range of applications. The OPEN Alliance Special Interest Group plays a vital role in the promotion process by simplifying deployment, providing standardized solutions and uniting various user and supplier communities. With 300 automotive and technology companies, the OPEN Alliance has laid a solid foundation for driving Ethernet-based technologies into the mainstream market and providing comprehensive support."

Main features of the BCM8953x switch chip

· A second-generation in-vehicle switch solution that integrates the BroadR-Reach physical layer enables low-cost connectivity by reducing cabling and connector costs;

· Integrated low pass filter;

· Advanced energy-saving features that support multiple low-power mode technologies;
