4 new products and GreenPoint online design tools expand LED lighting solution lineup

ON Semiconductor, the premier supplier of high performance, energy efficient silicon solutions for green electronics, will showcase its latest LED lighting solutions.

High-brightness LEDs (HBLEDs) are in wide-ranging range. Substituting incandescent lamps for applications, and solid-state lighting is gaining popularity in a variety of industries. Applications range from handheld electronic devices and liquid crystal display (LCD) panel backlights to general illumination, to architectural lighting and automotive lighting."

Small Buck LED Driver Controller for Energy Efficient, High Density Lighting Design

ON Semiconductor's NCL30100 is a new step-down LED driver controller that provides an excellent solution for space-constrained, energy-efficient, high-brightness LED driver applications such as low-voltage MR-16 LED bulb applications. This new controller helps designers optimize their solutions over a wide range of LED drive currents, making them ideal for low-voltage halogen to LED lamp replacement, LED track and landscape lighting, and solar LED products.

The NCL30100 can operate at high switching frequency and has the flexibility to choose the most suitable power MOSFET. The two features work together to provide the customer with the optimal design.

Based on the peak current type quasi-fixed off-time controller architecture, the NCL30100 is optimized for continuous mode buck operation, eliminating the need for output filter capacitors, saving board space and cost. Switching frequencies up to 700 kHz allow designers to use smaller inductors and thus save valuable board space. The NCL30100 meets the latest design energy savings requirements and delivers up to 95% energy efficiency. In low voltage AC applications, the NCL30100 can be dimmed with a standard wall dimmer.

Next-generation ESD protection devices for high-power HBLEDs

ON Semiconductor's new CM1771 is a 100 V back-to-back electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection device that extends the operation of HBLED lamp modules. The CM1771 is the industry's first ESD protection solution for HBLED applications with a breakdown voltage of 100 V. This device is part of ON Semiconductor's innovative LuxGuard family of high-voltage ESD protection solutions for general-purpose lighting, signage, automotive and commercial lighting applications.

In order to accurately grasp the emerging opportunities of HBLED technology, transmitter manufacturers need to ensure that their devices are not vulnerable to ESD strikes. Providing high breakdown voltage protection is a new challenge when ESD strikes are required to dissipate higher power levels while maintaining acceptable low dynamic clamping voltages. The CM1771 features a proprietary side-mount construction that provides reliable and symmetrical ESD protection in a tiny, cost-effective die that can be easily integrated into a wide variety of HBLED lamp modules.

Adjustable constant current regulator for LED lighting applications

ON Semiconductor also expanded its lineup of adjustable constant current regulators (CCRs). These new CCRs provide surge voltage suppression to protect LEDs in general lighting and automotive lighting. They are simple and reliable, providing a cost-effective, stable current design for LEDs. These devices are based on ON Semiconductor's proprietary and patent-pending self-biasing transistor (SBT) technology that regulates current over a wide voltage range.

The company's new high-density CCR devices eliminate the need for additional steady currents within the system design, providing engineers with a highly effective LED protection solution with tight application budgets and development schedules. The CAT3661 is capable of driving a single LED backlight at up to 5 mA. Soft start current limiting and short circuit protection make this new device ideal for button battery powered devices. The CAT3661 is available in a TQFN-16 package of only 3 mm x 3 mm x 0.8 mm (height), providing a useful solution for engineers looking for new designs with limited board space. The four-mode charge pump supports a wide range of input voltages from 2.0 V to 5.5 V. It also provides the CAT3661 with a peak energy efficiency rating of up to 92%, up to 10% higher than traditional energy-efficient 1.5x three-mode charge pumps. The CAT3661 is priced at $0.86 per unit in 10,000-piece quantities.

GreenPoint Design Tools

ON Semiconductor has developed an innovative GreenPoint tool that provides interactive online design and verification to accelerate solid-state lighting solutions. The GreenPoint tool automatically calculates the optimal circuit configuration based on LED configuration, voltage, current, or switching frequency design requirements, selects the appropriate inductor and capacitor values, and displays the final design in an interactive online circuit diagram. This GreenPoint design tool is a virtual test bench that provides a variety of analyses that allow engineers to test the performance of their solutions.

Once the design is validated, the GreenPoint simulation tool generates a bill of materials (BOM) and a comprehensive design report that includes simulation results, schematics, and design data. This GreenPoint design tool incorporates ON Semiconductor's e-commerce tools, enabling users to select different components of the supplier and produce a bill of materials that meets the requirements. Users can also save design documents in a secure and private workspace for later reference and further modifications.
